Dautov, R. (2630) - Shirov, A. (2705) [D30] Bundesliga (2) 2001
Notes by Boris Schipkov
1. d4 d5 2. c4 c6 3. Nf3 Nf6 4. e3 e6 5. Bd3 Nbd7 6. O-O Bd6 7. Nbd2 O-O 8. e4 e5 Possible is 8...dxe4. 9. cxd5 cxd5 10. exd5 exd4 11. Ne4 Nxe4 Bad is 11...Bb8? 12. Bg5 h6 13. Bh4 Qb6 14. Nxf6+ Nxf6 15. Bc4 Ne4 16. Re1 Nd6 17. Be7 Nxc4 18. Bxf8 Kxf8 19. Qc2 Nd6 20. Qh7 f6 21. Nh4 Kf7 22. Ng6 Nf5 23. Nh8+ Kf8 24. Qg6 1-0, Black resigned in Malaniuk, V - Utnasunov, A, White Nights, St Petersburg 2001.
Another try is 11...Qb6 12. Nxd6 Qxd6 13. Nxd4 Ne5 (if 13...Qxd5 then 14. Nb5 or 14. Nf5 gives White an edge) 14. Nf5 Bxf5 15. Bxf5 g6 16. Bc2 Rfd8, Slobodjan, R - Rigo, J, Arco open 2000. Here instead of 17.Bf4? White could play 17.Bb3! Nxd5 18. Bg5 Rd7 19. Re1 with a better game. 12. Bxe4 Nf6 13. Qxd4 Nxe4 14. Qxe4 Re8
15. Qd4! The strongest continuation. Weaker is 15. Qd3?! Qf6 16. Be3 Bf5 17. Qd2 Be4 1/2-1/2, a draw in Kasparov, G - Kramnik, V, Moscow blitz match 1998. Or 16. Bg5 Bf5 17. Qd2 Qg6 18. Bf4 Be4 19. Bxd6 Qxd6 20. Ng5 Qxd5 21. Nxe4 Qxe4 22. Rfe1 Qc6 23. Rac1 Rxe1+ 24. Qxe1 1/2-1/2, a draw in Chiburdanidze, M - Wang Lei, 2nd SUFE Cup Rapid, Shanghai 2001. 15...Bf5 White has an extra pawn in the centre. Black has some compensation for the pawn - two bishop, but I think it's not enough for equality.
In the game Halkias, S - Poliakov, D, ECh-u20, Aviles 2000 White obtained only a small advantage after 15...b6 16. Bg5 f6 17. Be3 Ba6 18. Rfe1 Qd7 19. Rad1. Better is 16. b3 or 16. b4 with an edge to White. 16. Bg5 Qd7 A novelty. The first player has a pleasant position after 16. Bg5 Qa5 17. Bd2 Qb5 18. Bc3 f6 19. Rfe1 Red8 (Drasko, M - Kosic, D, Podgorica 1993) 20. Rad1. 17. Rfe1! b6 18. Bh4! A good manoeuvre keeping the advantage. 18...Bc5 19. Qd2 Be4 20. Rad1 a5 Or 20... Bxf3 21. gxf3 Qa4 22. Rxe8+ Rxe8 23. Bg3 Qxa2 24. d6, winning. 21. a3 Qg4 22. Bg3! The alternative is 22.h3.
22...Bxf3?! Losing quickly. However and after 22... Red8!? 23. h3! Qf5 (23...Qxg3 24. Rxe4) 24. d6 Bxf3 25. gxf3 Qxh3 26. Qf4 a4 27. Re7 Qh5 28. Qg4 Qh6 29. Qf5 Qg6 30. Qxg6 hxg6 31. Rc7 White has a clear advantage in the endgame. 23. gxf3 Qxf3 24. d6 The passed pawn concluded the game. 24...Red8 25. d7 h5 26. Qd5 Qf6
27. Qxa8! A nice blow. 27...Rxa8 28. Re8+ Kh7 29. Rxa8 Be7 30. Re1 Bd8 31. h4 b5 32. Rxd8 Qxd8 33. Rd1
Black resigned. 1-0
