Grabics, Monique - Schipkov, Boris [B33]
Gyor Hungary ch open 1990

Notes by Boris Schipkov

By this game, in which I met with the nice Hungarian girl Monique, we are convinced once again in correctness of the ingenious words of the composer, chess player and theorist Francois-Andre Danican Philidor that "The Pawn is the Soul of Chess".
1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 Nf6 5. Nc3 e5 6. Ndb5 d6 7. Bg5 a6 8. Na3 b5 9. Bxf6 gxf6 10. Nd5 Bg7!
It is pleasant to use my favourite Novosibirsk variation.
11. c3 f5 12. Bd3

12...Ne7! 13. Nxe7 Qxe7 14. exf5 e4! 15. Be2 O-O 16. Nc2 Bxf5 17. Ne3
After 17. a4 Black would play 17...bxa4 18. Rxa4 Rfb8 19.Ra5 Rxb2! 20. Rxf5 Bxc3+ 21. Kf1 Rab8 22. Na3 d5 (22... Ra2 23. Nc2 Rab2 24. Na3) 23. Qxd5 Rd2 24. Qc4 Qxa3 25. Qxf7+ Kh8 26. g3 e3 27. Qc7 Rg8 28. Rf7 Bg7 29. Qc4 exf2 with advantage. If 18. O-O, then 18...Rfb8 19. Nb4 Bd7 with better prospects for Black .
16...Be6 18. O-O Rad8 19. a4 f5
Stronger is 19... b4! 20. Bxa6 (20. cxb4 d5) 20... bxc3 21. bxc3 Bxc3 22. Rc1 Be5 23. Qh5 f5 with initiative.

20. f4?!
A mistake. 20. Nd5 leads to a sharp struggle 20...Qf7 21.Bh5! Qd7
Worse is 21... Qb7 22. Nf4 Bc4 23. Be2 Rfe8 24. axb5 axb5 25. Bxc4+ bxc4 26. Qd5+ Qxd5 27. Nxd5 Rb8 28. Ra2 Rb7 29. Ne3 Reb8 30. Nxf5 with a good endgame for White.
22. axb5 axb5 23. Re1 Be5 24. Qd2 Kh8 25. Ra5 Rg8 26. Be2 Qg7 27. Bf1
(27. g3 f4 28. Nxf4 Qg5 29. Bxb5 Rdf8 30. Rxe4 Bxf4 31. Qd4+ Be5 32. Qe3 Bf4 33. Qd4+)
27... Qg4 28. Rxb5 Rg6!
(28... Qh4 29. g3 f4 30. Bg2 e3 31. Qxe3! fxe3 32. gxh4 Bh3 33. Nxe3 Rxg2+ 34. Nxg2 Rg8 35. Kf1 Rxg2 36. Ke2)
29. c4 Qh4 30. g3 f4 31. Bg2
If 31.Rxe4? then 31...fxg3!! 32.Rxh4 gxh2++ 33.Kh1 Rg1 checkmate!
31...e3 32. Nxe3
(32. Qxe3? fxe3 33. gxh4 Bxd5 34. Rxd5 Rdg8 35. Rxe3 Rxg2+ 36. Kf1 Rxh2)
32... fxe3 33. Rxe3 Qf6 34. b3 and White has three pawns for a piece.
20...b4 21. Kh1 d5! 22. Qc2 bxc3 23. bxc3 Qc5 24. Nd1 Rd6 25. Rc1 Rc8 26. Bh5 d4 27. Rf2 e3
The winning procession of pawns. As the great Russian actor, poet and singer Vladimir Vysotsky sang: "In the world of chess the pawn can become, if it trains, a queen".
28. Rf3 d3 29. Qb2 d2
White resigned. 0-1
