Lautier, J. (2676) - Vaganian, R. (2623) [D31]
Aeroflot Open, Moscow (9) 2004

Notes by Boris Schipkov

1. d4 d5 2. c4 e6 3. Nc3 Be7 4. cxd5 exd5 5. Bf4 c6 6. e3 Bf5 7. Nge2
Interesting is 7. g4 or 7. Bd3.
7...Nd7 8. f3?!
Better is 8. Ng3.

8...Bg6!?
A novelty. Also possible are 8...h5, 8...g5, 8...Bh4+, 8...Nb6.
8...h5 9. e4 dxe4 10. fxe4 Bg6 11. g3 h4 12. Bg2 hxg3 13. Bxg3 Bh4 14. Qd2 Bxg3+ 15. hxg3 Rxh1+ 16. Bxh1 Qa5 17. Nf4 Ne7 18. O-O-O O-O-O, Epishin, V - Timoscenko, G, Tashkent 1987.
8...g5 9. Bg3 Ngf6 10. Bf2 Qb6 11. Qd2 O-O-O 12. Ng3 Bg6 13. Bd3 g4 14. Nf5 Bxf5 15. Bxf5 gxf3 16. gxf3 Ne8 17. Rc1 Kb8 18. Bg3+ Ka8 19. Kf2 Nd6, Hjartarson, J - Georgiev, K, Moscow 1990.
8...Bh4+ 9. Bg3 Bg6 10. Qd2 Nh6 11. O-O-O Bxg3 12. Nxg3 O-O 13. h4 f6 14. h5 Bf7 15. Bd3 Re8 16. Qc2 Nf8, Romanov, O - Azarov, S, Minsk 2000.
8...Nb6 9. Ng3 Bg6 10. Qd2 h5 11. e4 dxe4 12. Ngxe4 Nf6 13. Nc5 Qc8 14. Bd3 Bxd3 15. Qxd3 Nfd5 16. Be5 O-O 17. O-O Rd8 18. N3e4 f6 1/2, Milov, V - Goldin, A, Ashdod 2003.
9. Bg3?!
Now the patent on this move is belonged to the head of professional chessplayers Joel Lautier. If you want to use this fruit of his analysis and work shown in the game you must pay money to him. Better is 9. Ng3 or 9. e4.
9...Nh6! 10. Bf2?!
More precise is 10. Nf4.
10...Bd6! 11. g4?!
Now 11.e4?! is refuted by 11...dxe4 12. fxe4 Ng4 13. e5 Nxf2 14. Kxf2 Nxe5! 15. dxe5 Qb6+ 16. Kf3 Bxe5 17. Qb3 Qc5 18. g3 Bh5+ 19. Kg2 (19. g4 Bxg4+ 20. Kxg4 Qe3) 19...Qe3 20. Ng1 O-O-O. But correct is 11. Ng3 O-O 12. Bd3 Qg5 13. O-O with a small advantage to Black.

11...f5!
Here Black has a huge edge in development.
12. h3
Or 12. gxf5 Nxf5 13. h4 Bh5 14. Bg2 O-O.
12...O-O 13. Bg2 Qe7 14. O-O fxg4 15. hxg4
After 15. fxg4 Nb6 (15...Kh8 16. Qd2 Rae8) 16. b3 Rae8 17. Qd2 Nf7 18. Nf4 Ng5 19. Nxg6 hxg6 20. Qe2 Bc7 21. Kh1 Kh7 22. Rae1 Nd7 23. Bg1 Nf6 Black stands very well.
15...Qg5 16. Qd2
If 16. e4 then 16...dxe4 17. Nxe4 Bxe4 18. fxe4 Nxg4 19. Qb3+ Kh8 20. Bg3 (20. e5 Ndxe5! 21. dxe5 Qxe5 22. Qg3 Qxe2 23. Qxd6 Rxf2) 20...Nc5! 21. Qc3 Nxe4! 22. Bxe4 Ne3 23. Rxf8+ Rxf8, and Black wins.
16...Rae8 17. Rae1
Black grabs a pawn in the case of 17. Nf4 Bxf4 (17...Rxf4) 18. exf4 Qxf4 19. Qxf4 Rxf4 20. Rfe1 Rff8.

17...Rxf3!!
A stunning blow! The second player sacrifices his rook only for two pawns.
18. Bxf3 Nxg4 19. Bg3
Or 19. Bxg4 Qxg4+ 20. Bg3 (20. Ng3 h5 21. Qd1 Qg5 22. Kh1 h4, winning) 20...Nb6 (20...Bxg3) 21. e4 (21. b3 Bxg3 22. Nxg3 Qxg3+ 23. Qg2 Rxe3 24. Rxe3 Qxe3+ 25. Qf2 Qg5+ 26. Qg2 Qh4 27. Qf2 Qg4+ 28. Kh2 Nd7 29. Qf4 Qe6) 21...Bxg3 22. Nxg3 Qxg3+ 23. Qg2 Qxg2+ 24. Kxg2 dxe4 with a clear edge to Black.
19...Nxe3 20. Kh1?!
Losing at once. More stubborn is 20. Bg2 Bxg3 21. Nxg3 Qxg3 22. Rf3 Qxg2+ 23. Qxg2 Nxg2 24. Rxe8+ Bxe8 25. Kxg2.

20...Bh5!
Black's attack is unstoppable.
21. Bxh5
Or 21. Nf4 Nxf1 22. Rxf1 Qxg3 23. Nxh5 Qh4+ 24. Kg1 Re6.
21...Qxh5+ 22. Kg1 Qh3 23. Rf2 Bxg3 24. Nxg3 Qxg3+ 25. Rg2

25...Nxg2! 26. Rxe8+ Kf7 27. Rc8 Ne3+ 28. Kh1 Nf6
Threatening 29...Ng4 with mate in few moves.
White resigned. 0-1
