Chess and Opera in Vienna

"Operation Capablanca", a chess opera written by the Viennese artist Zenita Komad, had its first outing last thursday, September 1, at the Kunsthalle Wien (Vienna Contemporary Art Center). The opera which is set around a game won by Capablanca against Herman Steiner in 1933 has been performed on her installation consisting of a giant chess board and 32 sculpture pieces. Coinciding with Komadīs art project was a GM tournament (average rating 2443). 17 year old Arik Braun from Germany claimed first prize and his first GM result.

Chess is a vibrant and dramatic musical composed in the mid eighties by Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus of ABBA fame with lyrics by Tim Rice.
