Ponomariov, R. (2727) - Ivanchuk, V. (2717) [C11]

Notes by Boris Schipkov

1. e4 e6 2. d4 d5 3. Nc3 Nf6 4. Bg5 dxe4 5. Nxe4 Be7 6. Bxf6 Bxf6 7. Nf3 O-O 8. Qd2 Be7 9. O-O-O
Or 9. Bc4 Nd7 10. O-O-O Nf6 11. Rhe1 Nxe4 1/2, a draw in Nataf, I - Nogueiras, J, Capablanca mem, Havana 2001.
9...Qd5 10. Nc3 Qa5 11. a3!?
A novelty. In the game Ehlvest, J - Khalifman, A, Bali 2000 White played 11. Ne5 Bb4 12. Nc4 Bxc3 13. Nxa5 Bxd2+ 14. Rxd2 b6 15. Nc4 Bb7 16. Ne3 Nd7 17. Bb5 Nf6 18. f3 Rfd8 19. Rhd1 Kf8 1/2, a draw.
11...Nd7 12. Kb1 Qb6 13. Qe3 Nf6 14. Ne5

14...Rd8?!
A mistake. Interesting is 14...Nd5!? 15. Qf3 Nxc3+ 16. Qxc3 c5 17. dxc5 Qxc5 18. Qxc5 Bxc5 with more or less equal play.
15. Bc4 Bd7 16. Bb3 Be8 17. Rhe1 Bf8 18. g4 Nd5
If 18... a5 then 19. g5 (19. f4 a4 20. Ba2 Nxg4 21. Nxg4 Bxa3 22. b3 Qa5 23. Rg1 axb3 24. Bxb3 Kh8 25. Ne5 Bf8 26. Na2 c5 with compensation) 19... Nd5 20. Qf3 (20. Nxd5 exd5 21. Qf3 Bxa3) 20... Nxc3+ 21. Qxc3 Bxa3 22. g6 hxg6 23. Qh3 a4 with some advantage to White.
19. Qf3

19...c6?
The decisive error. Better was 19... Nxc3+ 20. Qxc3 c5 21. d5 exd5 22. Bxd5 Qc7 23. f4 Rd6 24. Nc4 Rd7 with only a small edge to White.
20. Ne4!
Now White has an irresistible attack.
20...Qc7
Or 20... c5 21. g5! cxd4 22. Bxd5 Rxd5 (22... exd5 23. Nf6+! gxf6 24. gxf6 Kh8 25. Rg1) 23. Nf6+! gxf6 24. gxf6 Kh8 25. Qg4 winning.
21. c4 Ne7
Also hopeless is 21... Nb6 22. g5 Nd7 23. Nxd7 Bxd7 (23... Rxd7 24. Nf6+!) 24. g6! hxg6 (24... fxg6 25. Ng5 Re8 26. Qf7+ Kh8 27. Nxh7!) 25. Ng5 Bc8 26. Qh3.
22. Ng5 Nc8 23. c5
Black resigned. 1-0
