Svidler, Peter (2747) - Bareev, Evgeny (2714) [C10]
Corus, Wijk aan Zee (3) 2004

Notes by Boris Schipkov

1. e4 e6 2. d4 d5 3. Nc3 dxe4 4. Nxe4 Nd7 5. Nf3 Ngf6 6. Bd3 c5 7. O-O Nxe4 8. Bxe4 Nf6 9. Bg5!

9...cxd4
Now White has a big lead in development.
10. Nxd4 h6?!
A risky continuation. Better are 10...Be7 and 10...Bc5.
10...Be7 11. Bf3 O-O 12. Re1 Qc7 13. c3 a6 14. Bh4 Bd6 15. Bxf6 gxf6 16. g3 Rd8 17. Bg2 Bf8 18. Qh5 Bg7 19. Rad1 Qb6 20. Nb3 Re8 21. c4 Qc7 22. Qa5 Qxa5 23. Nxa5 Bf8, Shirov, A - Anand, V, Wijk aan Zee 2001;
12...Qb6!? 13. Nb3 Rd8 14. Qe2 Bd7 15. Bd2 Bb4 16. c3 Bd6 17. c4 a5, Polgar, J - Van Wely, L, Hoogeveen 2001;
10...Bc5 11. c3 h6 12. Bxf6 Qxf6 13. Qa4+ Bd7 14. Qc4 Bxd4 15. cxd4 Rc8 16. Qb4 Bc6 17. Bxc6+ bxc6 18. Qb7 O-O 19. Qxa7 Rfd8 20. Rfd1 c5 21. dxc5 Qxb2 22. h3 1/2, Svidler, P - Izoria, Z, Bled ol 2002.
11. Bxf6 Qxf6 12. Qd3 a6 13. Rad1! Be7 14. Nc6!
A beautiful move.

14...e5?
A mistake. Correct is 14...O-O. After 15. Nxe7+ Qxe7 16. Qd6 Qxd6 17. Rxd6 Re8? 18. f4 Kf8? 19. Rfd1 Ke7 20. Bxb7 Rb8 21. Bc6 Rf8 22. b3 Rb6 23. c4 White has a huge advantage in the ending, Ciganikova, A - Rakay, K, Slovakia 1999. However, more precise is 17...Rb8!? 18. f4 b6 19. Rfd1 g5 20. g3 Bb7 with only minimal edge to White. Or 16. f4 Rb8 (16...e5? 17. f5 Qb4 18. f6 Bg4 19. Rde1) 17. Qd6 Qxd6 18. Rxd6 b6.
I think interesting is 16. Rfe1!? e5 17. Qd6 Qxd6 18. Rxd6 Re8 19. c4 with better prospects to White.
15. Nxe7 Qxe7 16. f4!
A strong blow in the center.

16...exf4?
Losing at once. After 16...O-O 17. f5! f6 18. Rf2 Kh8 19. Rfd2 White gets a superior position also, totally seizing the open file.
17. Bxb7!
If 17...Bxb7 (17...Qxb7 18. Qd8 mate) then 18. Rfe1, winning a queen.
Black resigned. 1-0
