Van Wely, Loek (2681) - Acs, Peter (2591) [E48]
Hoogeveen Essent (6) 2002

Notes by Boris Schipkov

1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 e6 3. Nc3 Bb4 4. e3 O-O 5. Bd3 d5 6. cxd5 exd5 7. Nge2 Re8 8. O-O Bd6 9. a3
White can also try 9. Bd2 or 9. f3.
9...Ng4! 10. h3?!
This is a weak move, although it looks natural. Better is 10. Nf4 c6 11. h3 Bxf4 12. exf4 Nf6 13. Be3 Nbd7 14. Qf3 Nb6 15. b3 with equality in Obukhov, A - Ikonnikov, V, Cheliabinsk 1989.
10...Nh2! 11. Re1

11...Nf3+!!
A beautiful sacrifice! Black begins a powerful attack. Worse is 11...Bxh3? 12. e4 (12. gxh3 Nf3+ 13. Kg2 Nxe1+ 14. Qxe1) 12...dxe4 13. Nxe4 Nc6 14. Bg5.
12. gxf3 Qg5+ 13. Kh1
Interesting is 13. Kf1 Bxh3 checkmate.
13...Qh4! 14. Nf4
Or 14. Kg1 Bxh3 15. f4 Bg4 16. Qb3 Bf3 17. Ng3 Bxf4 18. Nce2 Bd6 19. Bd2 (19. Qxb7 Nd7 20. Bf5 Nf6) 19...Re6 20. Qxb7 Rh6 21. Qc8+ Bf8 22. Kf1 Bg4 and Black wins.
14...Bxh3 15. Ncxd5
Also hopeless is 15. Ng2 Qxf2 16. Bf1 Nc6 17. Nb5 Re6 18. e4 Rg6 19. Qe2 Qg3 20. f4 Bg4.

15...Re6!
Another nice sacrifice.
16. Nxe6
If 16. Bg6 then 16...c6 winning.
16...Bf5+! 17. Kg1 Qh2+ 18. Kf1 Bg3!
White resigned. 0-1
